My First Engineering Lecture

I've always wanted to teach engineering through the lens of sustainable development because I believe that engineers have immense opportunity to lessen human impact on the environment by not only redesigning and optimizing current technologies but also by guiding future development decisions.

By some crazy stroke of fate, I've become a member of the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Rutgers University and was asked to teach a section of Engineering Mechanics - Statics to a class of 200 freshman engineering students this semester. Although I'm still wrapping my head around the fact that this is happening, yesterday was my first lecture!

I was given a prepared slide deck for the class, but was also told that I have freedom to alter the slides as I see fit. I chose to focus my first lecture not only on all of the positive innovations that engineers have created to get our society to where it is today, but also all of the challenges that the world is currently facing and how engineers can help solve them. My goal was to inspire and excite these freshmen students as they begin their engineering journey - and I have to say I think I did that! I couldn't have asked for a better first class.
